If I get issues like this in the RAV PHEV I just reboot the head unit, long press on the LH knob. ( This may not be an option for you guys )

It sounds like the phone is loosing the location and I’ve seen this happen from time to time also.

The only way we know to reboot is to power off the car, then power on again, not an option when driving of course.

Of course there may be another way we don't know about, did try holding down the only button to no avail

That's frustrating not having a physical way to reboot the Head Unit without stopping the car but maybe there are things working behind the scenes that negate power cycling the Head Unit when on the move?

It works in exactly the same way as the Touch 2 system on our RAV4s - just press and hold the Audio On/Off Volume button:

That’s what I would have hoped.  This reboot when on the move with the PHEV, my only reference, generally works to sort most problems. Just as it does with many electrical appliances, computers, tablets, phones etc.

Well it crashed again this morning, and we tried this method , SUCCESS !!  Thank you !

Fairly sure it did not work last time we tried, however since then there was a software update, maybe it got fixed, or maybe we didn't hold the button down long enough, it seesm to need about 3 to 4 seconds as shown in your diagram

Found this article

Thanks for posting.

Sorry to say however it looks a really terrible piece of writing, contains absolutely nothing new, and paints a dire picture of the bZ4X.

These so called journalist have probably never even sat in the car, let a,one driven it, that miuch is obvious from their advert blitzed web page.

After over 3,400 miles of driving over six months, we are very impressed by the car.  It is ourt first ever Toyota and it's posibly the best car we have ever owned.  Previously has Jaguar, BMW and many others.

In the current climate we are now reguarly seeing 4 to 5 miles per Kw too !!

We are now completely sold on the Toyota brand and very happy with the product.  And we don't have to pay a subscription for things like heated seats and the like !!!

Similar here, just under 4k miles now. When asked I always say to people that its an average EV, but a very good car. And the majority of things that make it "average" as an EV are fixable via software updates. Any car, EV or otherwise, has to fit the drivers needs. The BZ4x suits my family perfectly and we're also very happy with it.

I though we would receive a notification when there is an software update. But unfortunately that's not the case.

Customers will need to check regularly to see if there is any software update.

That sounds about right ... had this been a safety issue or update via a formal recall then, of course, owners would expect to be notified by their dealer to arrange to have the update applied. But, at the end of the day, this is simply a minor and optional update - owners can choose whether or not to have it applied.

I don't know how this will be managed within the dealer network but I would hope that the update would be applied FOC if (and only if) requested by the owner at the next scheduled service. And there would probably be a service charge if the car is booked in to have the work done separately and sooner. As I say I don't know, and am only guessing, but there is some precedent for this approach (the AA / ACP updates).

Bz4x is still under development 😂😂😂 they should not charge any money for updating it. They must pay owners for the contribution we made!

That's a bit poor really.  You would think a notification via the app or car system would be pretty simple

And the dealer should make contact too, let's hope that happens

So this is a recall too "3926D". They will not charge for this to us. Have you already left the car into the service?

It does feel like the early adopters are just being used as free beta testers sometimes!!

Agree and I love the BZ4X indeed. My friend has a Ford Mustang Mach-E, but it's not as comfortable as the BZ4X! I drove his car many times. The Mach-E is much more powerful and has a good-looking interior. Drivewise comfort: I would go with bZ4X.

Software update

I had the new software update today, along with a couple of other recalls. All free of charge. Dealer had my car all day and finished at 4.45pm.

Date In: 15/05/2023 Date Out: 15/05/2023

2 REC Carried out recall xgg78                   0.00

3 REC Carried out recall xgg95                   0.00

4 REC Carried out recall 3926D                  0.00

Immediately noticed the % state of charge (SOC) on the driver display. Also the reduction in range when using A/C now seems to be in line with how much drain the function has on the Battery. So, just putting on the fan on results in the loss of just a dozen miles rather than the 50+ seen before.

I've not had a chance to verify the other aspects of the upgrade relating to rapid charging speed, efficiency calculations and changes to buffer/displayed range.

This is what Toyota said about the upgrade (from Toyota bZ4X: your questions answered)

"At Toyota, we highly value any customer feedback and are paying our utmost attention to voice of the customer. Based on this and in the spirit of Kaizen, we will soon make a software update including several product enhancements available for the all-electric bZ4X.

The enhancements will be available via software update and include improvements of the DC-charging performance and the visualisation of the remaining range, current state of charge (SOC) and real-life energy consumption.

Currently, bZ4X has a range buffer providing customers a safety margin in case no charger can be immediately found when the meter-displayed range is 0 km. This to avoid that the vehicle immediately stops when remaining range reaches 0 km. Following customer feedback, we will decrease the range buffer by making a bigger part of the range (around 10 to 15km depending on conditions) visible for the driver and optimize the hidden safety buffer."

I contacted the dealer. They said it was an optional update so they would not normally contact owners. Seemed surprisingly straightforward really.
