RAV4 PHV

Hi everyone, I have just acquired a RAV4 plug-in hybrid, I have always had petrol/diesel cars and pretty old/basic ones at that, so I am on a learning curve!  My first concern is security as I know about the CAN exploit on some Toyotas but as far as I can gather the plug-in (and I guess later hybrids) are safe, does anyone have an opinion on this?  Should I be looking at adding extra protection of some kind?  So far I am just putting my key into power save mode at night, anyone else do that?  Thanks!

With a 2022 PHEV you don't have any particular security concerns to worry about. The key will go to sleep if you put it down and leave it alone - so you are not vulnerable to a relay attack.

The PHEV is not vulnerable to the CANbus attack.

So, there is not too much chance of your car being stolen provided that you remember to lock it and look after the key.

However, there remains a risk that some idiot will try (and fail) to steal it and do damage in the process. So, take care where you park it! 😉 

Whack a Stop Lock Pro Elite on the steering wheel, visual deterrent and well worth the expense.

Thanks for all of the advice, it's much appreciated.  Hopefully the CAN bus attackers are all pros and will know not to go for the PHV.  I have ordered a stoplock for use in iffy locations, I think it's a good shout.  I might as well put it on overnight as part of the routine, since I have to go out and !Removed! about with the charge cable anyway.  So far I am very impressed with the RAV, it's returning astonishing economy even when I set off with the Battery flat, it's very impressive that it can be so rapid and also economical.

No, they are not ... most of the CANbus attackers are truly thick, and there have been several reports from folk with damaged cars that haven't been successfully stolen (?) beforehand ... 😞

Don't hold your breath, thieves are generally thick as. We have seen cars where the CAT is in the manifold, but the thicko's cut the exhaust off "thinking" it's a CAT. You can't fix stupid

You should. The majority of thefts that I've seen reported and discussed are from the home, suggesting a degree of scoping out where a vehicle is regularly parked before returning to take it.
