I need to swap over the rear light cluster ( drivers side ) on our old Gen 5 turbo convertable. The lens is broken and i have a replacement which is needed to pass an MOT before putting her up for sale. Can anyone point me in the direction on how to remove the old unit to add the new one.Thanks.

Hi markboy.1967

pop your boot, there is a small cap over a screw on the top of the tail-light that must be removed, unscrew the screw underneath.

there are two other screws near the outer side of your tail-light. remove these , you should be able to then remove your lens.

Thanks for the reply. I have now removed it however the Gen 5 rear light i have as a replacement is a different shape. The new one still has the indicator vent section and looks similar but doesnt fit.Are there different types. My car is a 1991 Cabriolet.

The car is an import so its Jap spec. There is quite a difference between the 2 rear lights but most noticeable at the indicator vented area.

i would try your nearest toyota dealer and see if they can order you the correct lens for your car, it will be costly, but save you time in the long run.

or try and find a specialist breaker , check out www.toptoyotasites.com you should find a breaker on there. hope this helps.

I did a search for the 1991 Cabriolet to look at pics, it seems that this is the only car to have this light configuration at the rear. The one on the cabriolet has a longer/thinner indicator lens, the vent at the top starts with a long vent and they get thinner as the lens goes down where the other ones have a small vent at the top and get broader. Hard to put in writing but easy when you see them together.

Hi m8, the part you show helps show the diference in the rear lights however i need the full thing as its the actual indicator lens iteself that had a chip out of it.I found a pair on eBay which were delivered today.Just need a little wipe over and fitting.Managed to get the car an MOT with some lens tape so will replace the lights tonight and put the car for sale in the morning.I will take a pic of the lights to show the differences to help others who may be in the same situation.

Here is a few pics showing the rear lights. You can see the vented area is very different and easy to spot. Also the lights are different in shape with te ST having a more square indicator area and the Cabriolet more an oblong type of shape. The actual curvature of the full rear lens is very different as well with the curve of the Cabriolet lens much more pronounced.
