12V AGM Auxiliary Battery vent plugs tool

Hello,

I own a Prius Gen 2.

I would like to remove vent plugs from my old AGM YZZPD Battery to add some ionized water or distilled water, I believe is too  low. It weights 12.8 KG and a new Battery will weight 13.5KG.

However can't fin a tool to remove those vent plugs. I couldn't fine any appropriate tool anywhere on the internet.

Any help would be appreciated where to find the tool.

AGM are a sealed Battery they are not wet cell batteries - you can not "wet" the cells as the compound is a paste

 

the vents are flame arrestors in case of excess internal pressure

Thank you for your quick response but, how you explain the weight difference? mine is 12.8 KG and new one is 13.5KG. Even on high grade rubber seals or silicone you still have a small % in breathing and drying out trough vaporization or other.

not sure tbh may be the degradation of the mesh/plates over time, life span of an AGM is  7-10 years but there are a lot of variables

My thoughts remains on the vaporization, even AGM batteries got a vent, and I found it, is on the side of the Battery.

Any paste, thermal, negative, positive, tomato paste got a certain humidity, if that humidity goes away even on 2 cells out of 6 than the Battery not gonna hold the charge, even if you try to charge it with AGM charger, the resistance will be to high because of the lack of humidity.

The AGM Battery is designed like that with tamper proof vent caps for a reason - to stop people from filling it up like an old school lead acid Battery.

If the Battery is not holding a charge any more just replace it.

Do *NOT* add water to a sealed lead acid Battery, whether it's AGM, gel or whatever - You will kill it and need to buy a new one!

My dad made that mistake with his Merc; Panicked because he couldn't see any water down the plug holes, after complaining how hard they were to remove, poured distilled water into them all and then found the car wouldn't start :laugh: 

If a Battery needs topping up it will say so and often have an indicator that shows whether it needs topping up or not. Almost all modern lead acid batteries are Maintenance Free and are designed with some overcapacity in mind so they last their designed lifetime without needing any water or acid added.

The caps and vents are ONLY for pressure relief, and are designed to vent hydrogen from over/under-charged batteries before enough pressure builds up to deform the casing or, in extreme cases, explode! (We have many examples at work where a Battery wasn't replaced in a UPS for too long and it's swollen up so much the UPS had to be dismantled to remove it. They end up looking a bit like Tetsuo from Akira when he looses control of his powers and turns into a cancer balloon :eek: :laugh: )
